  Empowerment Drumming

is not about performance. Group drumming is a form of recreational music-making to people regardless of musical experience, the term recreational being derived from the word, "recreatio" meaning "restoration to health."

Karl T. Bruhn, father of the music -making and wellness movement:  "Without the obstacle of a challenging learning curve, group drumming is an enjoyable, accessible and fulfilling activity from the start for young and old alike. From exercise, nurturing and social support, to intellectual stimulation, spirituality and stress reduction, group drumming stimulates creative expression that unites our minds, bodies and spirits!"

Empowerment Drumming is a comprehensive whole-person evidence -based therapeutic approach based upon an emerging discipline, "Rhythmacology" TM ., a term coined to describe the interdisciplinary study of rhythm. It begins with innate biological rhythms and extends to personal and group expression in the form of Empowerment Drumming.

Rhythm is essential for wellness. Our innate rhythms condition our health and establish a delicate biological balance often referred to as "homeostasis." Recreational music-making, without the threat of performance based fears, judgments or criterion, in its most simplest innate human rhythmic capabilities, endow any individual to find what they are capable of, and reestablishes that balance when we are stressed by the many pressures that exist in our lives.

Life begins with a pulse... From the movement of blood traversing our arteries and veins to the rhythmical tympani of the heartbeat that conducts the orchestra of life, natural rhythms remain comforting throughout our existence. It is not surprising therefor that drumming, one of the oldest healing rituals, is now receiving heightened interest and attention as a complementary therapeutic strategy in the conventional medical arena.  Drumming does not require a comprehensive understanding of all things in musical theory. It is one of the oldest and easiest forms of music-making,  easily integrated into a personal prescription for wellness.

For ancient civilizations, drumming created a sense of community and belonging. Actually, its no different today.

Drum circles are quickly catching on throughout the world for the same reasons they flourished thousands of years ago. This fascinating activity engenders a sense of personal and group worth through self-expression, sharing and contributing to the whole. It is a living metaphor of our capacity as humans to join forces to work together effectively.

The improvisational capacity and freedom of an act of creation in the moment in response to "orchestrating" one's own unique part" as they become "entrained" to the flow, time and creation of Group, provides a sense of greater self evaluation as the individual becomes a working part of the whole, which grows quickly to be greater than the sum of its parts...  a personal cog in the wheel that unveils the innate process and wisdom of the group -

Drum Circles remind us of our greatest synergistic potential.
